Late this afternoon, I took a hike on the bike trail starting at Midway (at the intersection of CTH OT and CTH ZN). I headed northwest toward Trempealeau. About ¾ mile up the trail, I found a flooded field on the west side of the trail (it is on the back corner of the Halfway Creek Marsh). When I noticed a couple of Greater Yellowlegs, I made a point to walk in on a small trail that goes to an overlook over that field / pond. The overlook is bordered by a split rail fence and has a bench on it. From that vantage point, I was able to scan the edges of the water with my binoculars. I spotted at least 50 shorebirds which were mostly Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs. However, I also spotted a distant bird that I was pretty sure was a Godwit. I ended up going back to my car to get my scope. With the scope, I was able to confirm that the bird was a Hudsonian Godwit. I also found 2 Dunlin in the with the Yellowlegs. The Godwit appears to be a juvenile and is almost entirely in winter plumage. It was starting to show some black feathers on the scapulars and I was also able to confirm the ID when the bird raised its wings and showed black underwings. The birds were still present at about 6:30 when I went back with a couple of other area birders. At Goose Island County Park this morning, I also found my first Northern Waterthrushes and Swamp Sparrows of the year. With the high water in the area, it has been hard to find the Swamp Sparrows.
