You CANNOT rename a domain controller.

The procedure you gave at the end of your message should work.

To recap, dcpromo ad2 (and take care of all of the catalog issues), demote the
old ad1, and rename it and shut it down. Rename the new server to ad1, and
promote it (and move the cataloges if you wish).

Great, sounds simple enough. Thanks for your advice.

One more question. After I dcpromo the new servers, move the FSMO roles and
all other functions to the new servers, and dcpromo the old server off-line,
can I just rename one of the servers without any dire consequences in the
active directory??

I want to rename "newad1" to just "ad1" after I take the current "ad1"
offline.

I have read some things stating that I can NOT rename a DC. So, maybe what
I'll do is setup my "ad2", dcpromo it up, dcpromo my old server down, take
it offline, then change the name of "newad1" to "ad1" and dcpromo it.

From your expert experiences, does my plan have any flaws or should this
work well?

Thanks!

Even easier, if you don't care about where the FSMO roles go: run DCPromo on
the old server (after the new ones have been DCPromo'ed) and let IT transfer
the FSMO roles to the new servers...

I actually like to see where they go, but for a part-time admin, that is the
easy way...

Just install the two new server. And rin DCPROMO.EXE And make them domain
controllers.

Then you have to move the FSMO roles and the GC from the old one, over to
the two new ones. Once all roles are moved. You run DCPROMO on the old
server, to remove AD from it. After that, you can remove it from AD and
scrap it.

DHCP and DNS must also be moved, but that is not completely the same as AD.
You should do that first.

Hello all,

I need some advice... What is the best way to cut-over to a new active
directory server?

Here's the situation: Currently, we have 1 Win2K AD server that handles
user authentication, domain security, DNS, DHCP, and probably some other
things I'm forgetting. I just got 2 new servers (win 2K) that are going to
replace the current server.

I do have plenty of down time to work on this when users aren't on the
network over weekends and evenings.

How about Microsoft's Active Directory Migration Tool... Will this help me
out?

Thanks in advance!
