I think Glen has very comprehensively covered the subject/question. If I may add a few things to it. I know that the original question specifically addressed 3 of the 5 FSMO roles (PDC emulator, RID and Infrastructure masters), but in case you need to switch over the other 2 (Schema master and domain Naming master): o Schema master: a) at the command prompt, register schmmgmt.dll by typing --> regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll b) add Active Directory Schema to mmc c) Active Directory Schema > right-click and select Connect to Domain Controller... and connect to another DC b) Active Directory Schema > right-click and select Operations Masters... > click Change o Domain naming master: a) Active Directory Domains and Trusts > right-click and select Connect to Domain Controller... and connect to another DC b) Active Directory Domains and Trusts > right-click and select Operations Masters... > click Change o you can force AD synch/replication by --> AD Sites and Services > Sites > site name > Servers > server name > NTDS Settings > right-click other DC's in the right-pane and click Replicate Now Randall -----Original Message----- From: windows2000-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:windows2000-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Sullivan, Glenn Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 11:43 AM To: 'windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [windows2000] Re: Need to move PDC from one system to another To clarify: DNS: let the AD synch before you shut off the old server. I wrote a script in VBS that forces a synch, if you are interested (duplicates the old NT4 Server Manager "Synchronize Entire Domain" function) Glenn Sullivan, MCSE+I MCDBA David Clark Company Inc. -----Original Message----- From: Sullivan, Glenn [mailto:GSullivan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 2:36 PM To: 'windows2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [windows2000] Re: Need to move PDC from one system to another DNS: Do you have Active Directory integrated zones? If so, add the DNS service to the other DC and you're done. GC: In AD Sites and Services, find the DC you want to be a GC and select it in the left pane. In the right pane, right click on NTDS settings and choose properties. Check off "Global Catalog". RID, PDC Emulator, and Infrastructure master: In AD Users and Computers, right click on "Active Directory Users and Computers" at the top of the left pane, and choose "Operations Masters." Change each on the tabs in the window that shows up. Hope this helps, Glenn Sullivan, MCSE+I MCDBA David Clark Company Inc. -----Original Message----- From: Rod Falanga [mailto:rfalanga@xxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2003 2:19 PM To: WINDOWS2000@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [windows2000] Need to move PDC from one system to another I have 7 Windows 2000 Servers in my network. One of them is the PDC = emulator, RID and Infrastructure server. Well, something is beginning = to make an awful racket in the beastie (I fear it may be the hard = drive). Anyway, because I have several external Windows 9x clients = connect to our network, I cannot let the PDC emulator (and other things) = fail. =20 I've never moved these functions from one domain controller to another, = so I want to go over the steps. How do I move: 1) The DNS Server 2) Global Catalog Server 3) PDC Emulator 4) RID 5) Infrastructure from one DC to another DC on my network? (I only have Windows 2000 = Servers in the network, running in native mode not mixed mode.) =A0 Rod Falanga http://amci.unm.edu =A0 ================================== To Unsubscribe, set digest or vacation mode or view archives use the below link. http://thethin.net/win2000list.cfm
