Another benefit is: in Mark's example he has 3 Citrix servers and the
terminals do not have hard drives. When Mark wants to update the
terminals, he simply installs the new software on his 3 servers and all
terminals are updated. So if he has 120 terminals and the upgrade
requires an hour each, he spends 3 hours instead of 120 hours.
Jim Kenzig also moderates an EXCELLENT list for thin client computing (
what Citrix does ). thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hope this helps

We just converted our bank to use Citrix, and plan to roll-out our first
branches utilizing it. The benefit being that each station costs us
around $300, the thin clients themselves have no floppy, cd or hardrives
(just RAM) (so it helps keep us secure from outside viruses and such),
the citrix management console helps me to shadow users when they are
having difficulties and show them how to fix common problems. I can work
from home and have the exact same desktop as I do from work.

16-bit applications run very poorly on citrix and must be avoided to
obtain the best performance. With our core banking apps we ran into
difficulties just because it's a new technology and a few of our vendors
have no idea what citrix is or how to get there apps running on it. We
did however find ways to eventually get them running, and are just
beginning to see the fruit of our efforts.

When its time to do updates we do the update to one Citrix server and
disable logins to that particular server. We have 3 citrix servers in
our "farm", so we can essentially test on one, and still load-balance
and have the redundancy of the other two.

The thins we purchased from Compaq..they have a couple usb ports, 128MB
Ram, serial port, printer port (you can still have local printers, and
if necessary external dvd players, etc..)

It's been a learning experience for sure, but I think we will be happy
with the results in the end.

-Mark

I hear everyone here talking about citrix. I never used any of their
products nor have any idea what/how good they are... Any
opinions/ideas/suggestions on it?

Sorry for my ignorance! But its better to ask then keep quiet! ; P
