Unfortunately. MS seems inclined to replace the simple with the complex.
You might investigate NetMeeting as a possibility, although it can be clumsy.
It is a built-in on win2k, and a free add-in for NT and 9x.

...Speaking of which - is there any interest in setting up a NetMeeting 
Conference Resource for this list? I believe I may be able to provide a 
directory server. It is about the same as AIM except you can conference 
easier and communications are more direct - they don't pass through a 
snooping message redirector. (I know that is has not been demonstrated that 
AIM servers eavesdrop, but on the other hand, I I was running them I 
couldn't resist the urge to snoop.)
