This map shows the "Delva Pond" in the lower left corner, to the west of
Wendell Road. This may be the BLack Gum Swamp, the trails group should be
able to confirm. The 1830 map in the back of Charlie Morse's book, calls it
"P. Delvae"

The Black Gum Swamp is on our radar screen. We (the trails group or
whatever we're called) have done two reconnaissance hikes back in that
direction -- one from the Wendell Road and one from Flagg Road. Alan Berman
accompanied us on the second hike and helped us to locate the boundaries
between town land (including the Shaw parcel) and state land that run
through the area. I agree with your observation about it being very nice
land back there, and it is not at all limited just to the Black Gums. It
would be great if we could have a nice, marked route back into that area,
complete with the kinds of interpretive signs we're planning to have at
Hockanum. As you would have seen, there are already good trails running
through the area that could serve as an excellent starting point.
Since we've done just about all we can do at the moment on the new
Hockanum trail, the trails group is going to turn its attention to the
trails at WCS next. We're planning on doing another reconnaissance walk
over there next week and continuing to coordinate with those involved in
the pavilion and gardens aspects of development over there. I hope that
we'll turn our attention back to the Black Gum Swamp and surrounding lands
next year some time.
Stay tuned, and for all who would like to get out of the house for a nice
little excursion, wander on over to Hockanum when you have a chance, and
check out the new loop trail.

I heard there was some black gums on the newly acquired Shaw property, on
the other side of Wendell and up the hill a ways. I wandered through that
whole area, found what looked like an area of old undisturbed mossy
boulders, but missed the black gums; but that's another area of nice
forests, some big exceptions, etc.

Several years ago the Town acquired some land south of the apex of
Hockanum Hill Road and there has been a short trail on that land to a
nice overlook to the east. Recently, volunteers have opened an
additional trail that runs a bit west of the original trail and now
forms a loop between the parking lot and overlook. Questions arose about
a small depression that was thought to be a cellar hole. Upon
examination I noticed that there are several rocks in and near the hole
that have been drilled and split. It appears that the hole was not a
cellar hole but rather a small test pit for a granite quarry. The hole
is only about 4 feet deep and 10 feet in diameter so very little rock
was cut and removed. During my recent examination of the hole, I also
noticed a very well constructed ditch about 20' away from the hole. The
ditch is about 3 feet deep and the top of the bank is higher than the
surrounding terrain. The ditch runs for several hundred feet. I am
puzzled why the ditch was constructed and wondering if anyone out there
can provide an answer. The uphill and downhill ends of the ditch are
nondescript and there really isn't any water anywhere around there to
transport since it is a dry hillside near the top of the ridge. I'd
welcome any info to try and solve this mystery. Jim
