Background: The Orange Community Center is a new space being prepared and
opened by volunteers to create a space for people to share and enjoy the
arts in downtown Orange.
The first program will feature the Greenfield Temple Israel READERS
THEATER, a new adult education initiative--reading and discussing plays
with Jewish themes.
25 Questions for a Jewish Mother, was written by Jewish, female comedians,
and performed Off Broadway. The play explores the cultural upbringing and
thinking of a wide variety of Jewish mothers. The audience hears actual
responses of twenty Jewish mothers who were interviewed, being asked
questions such as:
How important is it to you that your child be brought up Jewish?
Do you keep kosher?
Were you or any members of your family affected by the Holocaust?
There is both comedic and poignant content--a little stereotype; a little
history; a few flashbacks to Jewish thinking of past generations.
The key question for the audience: Is there something genetic or in the
Jewish experience that connects Jewish mothers across generations and is
different from non-Jewish mothers? And if there is a difference, what is
it? And where there are similarities, what are they? What values and
beliefs of our mothers continue in our lives?
The Orange Community Center art gallery will showcase local artist. Sarah
Kohler of New Salem will share her photography at the opening on March 17th.
