The sentiment is lovely and I support it wholeheartedly.
I would be glad to stand in a vigil, but what is described here is more
like a social gathering. How do we express our values if we're standing
around talking and singing?
By definition, a vigil is a silent watch to bear witness. It's the
silence and the signs people hold that affect public opinion.
For seven years I stood with others in a silent vigil for peace on South
Main Street in Orange. In the beginning, men from the bar across the
street yelled insults at us. One man came across the street and pushed a
paper of some sort in front of each of our faces. We did not react. Over
the years, people brought us water in hot weather, honked their horns and
waved, and some even parked their cars and joined us.
I'd rather have a silent vigil here in Warwick. I'm not sure I could
stand for an hour, though. And I'm not up to organizing anything these
days.

| I am writing to let you know of an
| event I am organizing in Greenfield, set for 1/28/17. I am
| planning on holding this type of vigil throughout the dark winter
| months (Jan., Feb. & March) and hope you can attend one or more of

| socializing and 1/2 hour of music/singing.
