“Dumb as a post” is a commonly used phrase. Think “dumbstruck.” It lends a
little color to our discourse to use such phrases, lest we fall into
doubleplusungood minspeech. Undoubtedly, once people have forgotten any kind of
language except what they hear on TV, such phrases will become politically
incorrect for no reason other than that they *sound* like bad things we’re not
supposed to say; I’d make a little list for purposes of illustration, except
I’m afraid the nannies will be all over me.

I'm curious, Miryam...If in fact you intended no insult, why didn't you just
say "silent"?

Yahoo and the other signers may be too embarrassed to do this themselves.
At least three of them were at the last selectboard meeting when I asked for an
explanation of the article and they all sat there dumb as posts (dumb means
silent, folks. No insult intended here.) They didn't even have the, um,
courage, to explain themselves.
