Hi Kendra, if I don’t wear a glove it seems that if I hit the wrong button, and
give it a couple seconds I can move to the right button and hit it to turn on
the function I want.

From what I can tell this works most of the time.  It does make a quiet chime
when you activate a button.  The off and on chimes are different.  It is an
ascending short chime when you press the on button, helping to indicate the
power is up.

I do like  having the Smart phone app along with it, even if I use the physical
buttons on the appliance the smart phone app informs me what the status is.  So
it is in essence like having a talking appliance.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing about these new types of appliance controls. There was a
conference several years ago at a hotel that had these for the elevator
buttons. When you tried to feel for the buttons you activated every button you
touched. It was a tall building, so it was a real pain and I resorted to asking
others to press the button for me. I find it frustrating to even think about
having these types of controls on appliances. Has anyone found any other
solution other than wearing a glove as described below?

Hi, to follow up on Marcie’s message, she brings up a good point about modern
appliance controls.

The older touch panels we use to mark with tactile markers, were called
resistive touch controls.  You can actually feel around the panel and find the
tactile mark and it takes pressure to activate the control.  This was doable.
but be aware capacitive controls are now being used.  This means you no longer
use pressure to activate the control.  Has anyone experienced this?

It means while feeling around the panel for the tactile mark you want you will
be setting off each control you touch because they use capacitance from your
finger.  No pressure is required.  Put a glove on your hand and touch the same
panel and it will not activate the control.

I use her home appliance labeling and overlay systems that Marcie mentioned.
They are on my over the range microwave, but it uses the older resistive touch
panel so you don’t have to wear a glove to use it, it takes pressure to
activate each control.

I did find I had to use Rhino glue to glue on the bottom row of my tactile
icons, because the heat from the range below the microwave would eventually
melt the standard adhesive.

So on my new smart range I have to wear a glove on one hand, find the tactile
mark for a control and take my bear finger from my other hand and activate the
control.

Or I have to use my smart phone app to control the appliance.  The
accessibility of the Smart phone app from Samsung definitely could be improved.

Perhaps you purchased the 1.9 cubic foot  Smart Over the Range Microwave with
Scan-to  cook technology,  Whirlpool Model #: WMH78019HW

If this is the one, it does have control through an app on a smart phone.  It
will require a Wi-Fi connection to make this all work.  Please send the list
your findings.  It all sounds good through advertising but firsthand experience
is the bottom line.

Hi B. J.

I was considering buying this microwave because I heard about it from Blind
Bargains Buzz email.  I decided not to get it because I wanted a microwave that
has convection cooking in it as well.  I just bought a whirlpool over the range
smart microwave/convection oven.  It can be run using Bluetooth so I think that
means using an IPhone or an Android phone.  I will have to mark it myself
because the controls are a flat screen literally as a part of the door.  You
can’t tell tactually that it isn’t just a door.

There is another oven from GE that works with the echo and it also has the
capability for programming for cooking various foods using the bar code on the
package.  It was also advertised on amazon.  You put the bar code in front of
the microwave and it programs the microwave to use the directions on the bar
code.

I heard about a marking system that I’m considering that uses dots and shapes
to identify what an appliance does.  I’ll probably just use Brailled dymo tape
to mark it.  I’ll let you know what I think of it once I use it for awhile.
