Call for Participants, ProTactile Theater Institute
Gallaudet University, May 15-27, 2017
Gallaudet University invites applications from DeafBlind
individuals to
participate in a two-week institute funded by the National
Endowment for the
Arts. This institute will develop models for theater by
DeafBlind people for
DeafBlind people. Participants will workshop an adaptation of
Romeo and
Juliet by DeafBlind writer John Lee Clark. At the end of the
institute,
participants will stage a short performance.
The institute will be facilitated by Clark, Jelica Nuccio,
co-founder of
Tactile Communications, Ethan Sinnott, professor of Theater at
Gallaudet,
and Rachel Grossman, ensemble director of dog & pony dc. Jill
Bradbury,
professor of English, will serve as project director.
Up to six participants will be accepted for the institute.
Participants will
receive a stipend of $1,000 each. Transportation to DC and
room/board on
campus will be provided as needed. Mobility orientation will
also be
arranged as needed.
Requirements
If accepted to the institute, participants agree to the
following:
1. Learn assigned roles and script prior to the institute.
2. Become familiar with ProTactile prior to the institute.
3. Participate fully in the activities of the institute,
including the
performance.
4. Refrain from smoking throughout the institute (due to the
close
contact involved).
Application
Application deadline - February 28, 2017
Applicants will be informed of decisions by March 31, 2017,
To apply, please send a letter of interest and one letter of
recommendation.
The letter of recommendation should be from someone who knows you
well - a
co-worker, a teacher, or supervisor.
In your letter of interest, please answer the following:
o Why you would like to take part in this project and what
strengths can
you bring to it?
o Pro-Tactile theater involves direct interactions with
attendees, rather
than performance on stage. As an actor, you will interact with
the audience
directly. Do you have experience with changing the way you sign
to match
different people's signing styles and abilities? Provide
examples.
Letters can be in English (2-3 pages) or in ASL (2-3 minutes).
ASL letters
can be shared via a service such as Google Drive or Dropbox, or
as a private
video on YouTube. Send application materials to

Volunteers
Sighted volunteers are welcome. Volunteers must be fluent in
ASL. Volunteers
will not attend the institute, but will take on minor roles in
the play or
