Low vision rehabilitation is designed to address those challenges, but if professional assistance is unavailable, the new "Self-Help Guide to Nonvisual Skills" from MD Support may be a good second option. The guide features a self evaluation of 21 personal daily living activities. The evaluation is followed by lessons in how to achieve each of those activities using senses other than sight through application of low vision devices, technology, software, and assistive procedures. The user may want to use the self-evaluation solely for determining personal needs and discovering options. Sharing the results, however, with a trained low vision rehabilitation therapist is highly recommended. Professional support can be invaluable for putting the options into practice and keeping motivation high. The guide is free, either on line at http://www.mdsupport.org/guide.html , or in printable PDF format from http://www.mdsupport.org/guide.pdf . Both are electronic-reader friendly and apply the new concept of "invisible assistive text." Spiral bound hard copies will also be made available at cost for people who do not have Internet access.
