From; Sophos Alert System: Name: W32/Mytob-AB Type: Win32 worm Date: 11 April 2005 A virus identity (IDE) file which provides protection is available now from the Sophos website, and will be incorporated into the June 2005 (3.94) release of Sophos Anti-Virus. Customers using EM Library, PureMessage or any of our Sophos small business solutions will be automatically protected at their next scheduled update. At the time of writing, Sophos has received no reports from users affected by this worm. However, we have issued this advisory following enquiries to our support department from customers. W32/Mytob-AB is capable of spreading through operating system vulnerabilities such as LSASS (MS04-011). When first run, W32/Mytob-AB copies itself to the Windows system folder as win32.exe and creates the following registry entries: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run WIN32 win32.exe HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices WIN32 win32.exe HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run WIN32 win32.exe HKCU\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa WIN32 win32.exe HKCU\Software\Microsoft\OLE WIN32 win32.exe HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole WIN32 win32.exe HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa WIN32 win32.exe W32/Mytob-AB copies itself to the root folder as: funny_pic.scr my_photo2005.scr see_this!!.scr W32/Mytob-AB will create another file in the root folder named hellmsn.exe. This file is detected by Sophos as W32/Mytob-D. The original message was included as an attachment. The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment. The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment. Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available. The attached file consists of a base name followed by the extentions BAT, CMD, PIF, SCR, EXE or ZIP. The worm may optionally create double extensions where the first extension is DOC, TXT or HTM and the final extension is PIF, SCR, EXE or ZIP. W32/Mytob-AB harvests email addresses from files on the infected computer and from the Windows address book.
