From; Sophos Alert System: Name: W32/Kelvir-H Type: Win32 worm Date: 7 April 2005 A virus identity (IDE) file which provides protection is available now from the Sophos website, and will be incorporated into the May 2005 (3.93) release of Sophos Anti-Virus. Customers using EM Library, PureMessage or any of our Sophos small business solutions will be automatically protected at their next scheduled update. At the time of writing, Sophos has received no reports from users affected by this worm. However, we have issued this advisory following enquiries to our support department from customers. W32/Kelvir-H attempts to spread by sending a message through Windows Messenger that encourages the recipient to download a file from a website at members.lycos.nl/csecurity/screensaver/Screensaver.scr, and contains one of the following lines of text: "Damn, this is so sick!!" "This is coooollll!!! w0w!" "What a cock :| Damn ACCEPT!!" "What a sick dude, lol!!" "This guy is sooo lucky, what a chick!" In order to be able to run automatically when Windows starts up, W32/Kelvir-H sets the following registry entries with the path to the runing file: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Services HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Microsoft Services HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\Microsoft Services HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce\Microsoft Services HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Microsoft Services In attempt to hide itself W32/Kelvir-H sets the registry entries: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\ DisableTaskMgr dword:00000000 HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\ DisableRegistryTools dword:00000000 W32/Kelvir-H may modify the following registry entry: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Start W32/Kelvir-H also attempts to download a service.exe file from a predefined website. At the time writing this site was unavalaible.
