Fair point Kathleen but I followed that to the letter and it did not work for
me. If my sistem started speaking and saying it had updated then why should it
stop due to problems with the sounds? Please do understand I am not having a
go at you and many people on the list will probably be delighted to read this
message from Paul again.

  Hi Mary,
Paul posted the following reply to the list some time ago in response to a
queery which some people had re Avast not making announcements . You could try
it anyway. It might be a solution to your problem.

  Kathleen Doyle.

  Hi All,

For anyone who suddenly notices that Avast is not informing them of the
fact it has updated, this is not a problem as windows XP will notify you
that your anti virus is out of date if your virus software is failing to
update itself. Do not worry unduely about this okay. This is a problem with
the sounds and audio settings in windows and is not an indication that your
anti virus is failing to update. Another issue is that when you do get a
message telling you that Avast is not updating, this usually means that the
current serial number you have has reached its life limits. I have pasted
below a fresh new avast number for anyone who needs it. To insert this
number when it is required do the following:

  1. Go to the avast icon on your desktop and press enter.

  2. Wait for it to open up then tab to the "registeration button" and hit
  enter or spacebar.

  3. When the registeration window opens you will be asked to insert a number,
just copy and paste the below serial number into this box and hit the enter
key. If its been successful then Avast will tell you so and you just press
enter key a second time. Now you are done for another 14 months.

  Avast serial:
  W0864744H1400A0011-UDV6PTVP

  Paul.

Hi to all, and a happy new year to everyone on the list. I have the Avast
anti-virus programme on my computer. Up to recently, when I switched on my
computer, a voice told me that "virus database is being updated" but
recently this is not happening. Is this something to worry about, or is it
still happily working away in the background?. Your help would be
  appreciated.

  Kind regards,

  Kathleen Doyle.

Florl, thank you very much for your help. I finally have my computer
updated. Avast still has made no anouncements, so that must be a different
problem. Anyone any suggestions. thanks once again. Mary Stratton
