Hi Eamon. Thanks for this. This is really helpful. I'll investigate goldwave and soundforge. Thanks again. There is a program called Sound Recorder which comes with Windows. however, I think you can only record for a couple of minutes with it. Alternatively, it may insert beeps into the recording at regular intervals. In other words, I think it is only for test purposes, and most people will use fully functional alternatives If you wish to experiment, you'll find it in: . programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder. Press f1 to read the help topics. If this isn’t suitable, there are some free programs available, such as Gold Wave. www.goldwave.com I haven’t used it so I can’t advise. You then need to locate your sound card, probably at the rear of your pc. You will feel a couple of headphone type sockets. One may have a cable coming from it, feeding your speakers, assuming you’re using a desktop. Another socket will be a Line In socket, which carries the sound from your tape recorder. One end of the cord you mention, plugs into the earphone socket on your tape recorder, and the other into the line in socket, on your pc’s sound card. Before recording, you need to take a look at your Windows Volume Control, but this is easily done. Enter the volume control by typing: Sndvol32 in the run dialogue box. If this doesn’t work, it’s under entertainment, as previously described. You’ll land on the volume control. Tab around here, making sure the left/right balance controls are around 50%, and the up/down sliders are near 100%. Ensure all mute boxes are unchecked. Then press ALT P and enter on properties. You’ll land on the name of your sound card. Tab once, and then Arrow down to the record button and press enter. Here you’ll have a similar dialog to the playback tab. The important difference is that the checkboxes in this dialog are NOT mute boxes. They allow things to happen, and only 1 can be checked at a time. For instance, you’d check microphone, if you had a microphone connected to the mike input on your sound card. Because you’re recording from cassette, make sure line in is checked. Checkboxes, such as those in the playback and record dialogs, can be checked or unchecked with the spacebar. When you’re satisfied with your choices, press ALT f4 to save your settings and close the volume control. You would then open your sound recording program and click or enter on record, then press play on your tape recorder, to start recording. I’d advise you to do a couple of tests first, as the tape recorder’s volume may be too low or too loud. Don’t be put off by this email, it really sounds more complicated than it is. Good luck. Eamonn Good luck.
