Hi all,
For your information,
I have found what I believe to be an excellent solution to the need to make
Citrix available to Non-Visual use.
I note that there are three screen readers that are compatible with the Citrix
based virtual desktop system. However, Dolphin is very little used in Ireland
any more and lacks peer support. The real choices are now between JAWS (Job
Access With Speech) and NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) which are very
actively used in Ireland and have a wide range of peer supports locally.
JAWS costs over €1,000 per licence and NVDA is free.
I strongly recommend that NVDA be used for this facility not just because it is
free, but because it is object oriented, unlike JAWS and well supported by a
very active team of developers world-wide.
In order to function within Citrix, NVDA needs software called UnicornDVC,
developed by Babbage ltd. On behalf of an organisation called Acces4U which is
the owner of the licence. It allows the creation of communication channels in
remote desktop connections and currently supports Microsoft’s Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP), Citrix and VMware Horizon. The installation and UnicornDVC
module are available from Babbage limited. I have spoken to their CEO and I am
assured that they have a broad range of experience of all three screen readers
and their installation in Citrix networks. I welcome the fact that they have
installed and continue to support many installations in Public Authority
locations internationally.
I am attaching a file in which Babbege show two tables. The first explains the
kind of services needed to support different stages of visual loss and the
relevant network supports that are available.
The second table displays the performance rating of the three options. The term
"USA" refers to the complete package of screen magnifier combined with NVDA and
UnicornDVC.

The following link provides a full discussion of the various ways in which NVDA
can be installed into the Citrix farm which might help as a briefing before
consulting Babbege.

As promised: Comparison sheet for the different accessibility software in the
attachment. Note that the performance of the Citrix farm is influenced by the
resources needed for the assistive software.
To our customers we are very transparent about functionality and performance.
(to be honest; it doesn’t matter what we supply as long as we solve the
problem). Our customers are for life an most of them appreciate our transparent
choice of products.
The Unicorn product is developed by Babbage for the company: Access4u. For
details see https://access4u.eu/downloads/
Babbage operates mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium and has at least one
client in Ireland. Access4u delivers licenses worldwide.
