That's funny. I wondered if you were the same David I knew, but what
caused me to doubt it was the whole VIBUG being a Boston based group
thing. I thought of writing and asking you if you were the same David
I knew, but in these days of people feeling paranoid about cyber
stalking, and being approached by people they don't know, I figured
I'd best leave it alone till you saw one of my EMails and were
prompted to write if my name was familiar to you, or till I spoke with
Tim Cumings and asked him.
Thanks so much for your response about the JAWS spell checker and
JART. I just might check out JART. I have the MS Office program that
was the latest version back in 2018, but had to uninstall it last year
when I had to restore Windows, and now I'm locked out of the Outlook
mail account I used to verify myself to the MS accessibility people
I'd call to get assistance with the re-installation. So JART might be
the way to go if I want a word processor with more features than HJ
Pad.
Before I saw your EMail, I divided the document I was spell checking
in two, and realized that the problem is not that Jaws won't read the
word count, but that apparently after a certain amount of words, it
won't read it automatically. When the document became two documents
with less than 7000 words each, it read the word count automatically
on each part.
Where are you? Are you still in Maryland, or have you moved back to
Philladelphia?
I want to apologize for not having sent your marriage questionnaire to
the Catholic Church. When we last spoke, I was having problems with
the form because I had a hard time figuring out where to put the
answers, and there were questions I didn't have enough information on
to fill in the answers. But I was in the process of moving back to
Puerto Rico, with all of the chaos a move like that entails, had
difficulties adjusting, mainly to the lack of mass transit, went back
to Boston twice to try to live there, and somehow I even lost track of
the form. I'm back in Puerto Rico, after my last stay there in 2018,
and intend to stay. My mother is older now, and the issues of
security around her immediate area are such that I don't think she
should be alone.
The lack of mass transportation has sort of cramped my political
activist style, but at least i'm doing some interesting things. I'm
using Twitter and Facebook now to post things I translate to Spanish
about Palestine, and have begun disseminating the writings and
observations of one of our former Puerto Rican political prisoners,
Oscar López, via Twitter. I'm also attempting to translate a book,
God help me, to English on the mother of two of our former political
prisoners, who was a political activist in her own right. I have no
formal training in translation, but after doing stuff like this for a
while, I have a sense of how translations need to sound in the
language they're being translated to. They have to sound as if the
thoughts and observations were originally expressed in that language.
So not having the formal training, I have to tussle with each
translation, God knows, but I think I manage to produce something that
conveys the concepts and sentiments of what was expressed in the
original language. So I've gone from being a street agitator and
activist to being an online whatever the hell. Laugh.
I'm singing again, though not often, but I do attend rallies and other
events with my guitar when I can, which is not often, this time on
account of Covid, in addition to the lack of mass transit. Ah, but
now I've even sang over Zoom. Laugh.
If I'm the Marta you knew, you'll remember that I didn't come by
learning Windows very easily. Well I use Windows, and what's even
stranger, is that I managed to learn something or two about getting
around the IOS devices. I have an iPhone and an iPad, and love being
able to get regular EBooks and reading them with VoiceOver, or in
Braille with the Orbit.
I finally got overdosed on Trek, so I'm not watching it on any kind of
regular basis. I do watch it with one of my friends when I visit
Chicago. Do you still watch Dr. Who?
Thanks again for your help. And I hope I am the Marta you knew.
Because it would be terribly shocking for you to read about my
political goings on, if the Marta you knew was someone else. Laugh.

I opened HJPad with the August release of JAWS 2020. After deliberately
making some spelling errors I ran the spell checker by pressing f7. In
my case the word count was not announced automatically when HJPad
informed me that the spell check was completed. However, the word count
is physically on the screen. Pressing insert+B to read the contents of
the dialog box does read the word count information. You can also enable
the JAWS cursor to review this information.
Another alternative you could try is a program called Jarte.
<www.jarte.com> It is a word processor with some additional features
beyond what HJPad offers. The program is free with a $20 upgrade fee to
get Jarte Plus, with even more features.
Jarte automatically detects the presence of a screen reader and goes
into what it calls "screen reader mode" where some of its dialogs are
built to be easier to navigate for users of screen readers, including
the spell checker. Jarte also has a hotkey to speak the word, line and
character count of your document.
By the way, I'm wondering if you're the same Marta that I once knew many
years ago. If you are I've wondered how you were doing.
