I also have the larger Echo which requires a external power source. The sound
is pretty good.
However, I do not believe the Echo-Dot is meant to be used as a stand alone
unit. There was a list of compatible speakers on Amazon’s website.
I pre-ordered the EchoDot and will use it with an existing Bose speaker,
because otherwise I would not be able to hear the little thing.

ZI don't know what a tap is, but the dot doesn't sound as good as the
original echo. However, the dot has an output jack so you can plug it into
another amplifier. The original echo sounds very good for its size, my main
complaint was no output jack.

I'm thinking that it's smaller, and the sound would not be as good as the
Tap or the Echo. Is that right?
