public libraries in the state are connected to.
The program in Ohio relies on a backbone for this program which is Overdrive.
Overdrive offers the website that you log-in to, and, also search and
download books.
Books are offered in a number of formats, but, not all books offer all
formats. These formats include epub, PDF and Kindle encripted which
will open and read within the Kindle app on the Fire tablet.
As I said before, when I do a search, I also provide in advanced
search that I am looking for Kindle format books.
When you finally select a Kindle book, the website will switch to
Amazon and on that page you will be able to download the book to the
device of your choice. Now, just as a regular book taken out from the
public library, you will have three weeks to read before the book
release is killed.
Some books might already be taken out, and, you can place a hold. You
will be notified by email when that hold has been released for you to
download.
To recap. If your state uses Overdrive as the backbone of the state
public library online book system, the procedure is exactly the same
as above.
In other words, you need not have Overdrive installed on your Fire
tablet to download Kindle books and read them. I've done this dozens
of times, perhaps, hundreds. The website is fully accessible, but, it
will take time to figure out all the bells and whistles. Have
patience.
Of course, you need a public library card to begin!
