Hi, William. The operative word in the case of the basic model is "when."
People first must reach that point. We're still talking about the Catch-22
that David Faucheux warned about. Having to Google around for the
information is unacceptable, absolutely. Like some others, I remain baffled
why you're so eager to defend Amazon. With more than $100 billion in annual
revenue, it can do much better job that it is doing now – and end up making
more money in the end, with a bigger customer base.
As for the earlier TTS, I strongly agree that it was not absolutely blind
optimized (even though it's great that you were accomplished enough to make
use of it anyway). Amazon owes it to customers to do
terrific TTS interfaces for both blind people and the sighted.

amazon instructions correctly. i don't know how much more folks want.

to answer david. i have a ink-reader, the kindle keyboard bought in
2010. does that count.
that early tts kindle ereader could be voiced for navigation with a
simple keystroke on the keyboard right out of the box. and, i think
folks tend to forget that.
as for the other operations? sighted could do that, but, unless one
was very capable with that keyboard (no voice feedback to keying
provided) for all practical purposes; no.
but, i use it for simple continuous reading, pausing, restarting and
back and forth gross changes in location.
plus, it will play .mp3 files, many of which i have downloaded/edited
and are stripped audio from youtube videos of guitar tutorials and
songs which i use to learn melodies and riffs. i love that unit!
on another note, here is the protocol needed for the bluetooth
headphones for the kindle ereader 8th generation:
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
i found many that fit this requirement online, amazon and ebay. it
should not be hard to find a unit that works. and not that expensive.
