Hi Don. The dictation you refer to isn't for the keyboard. That seems
to have been phased out after the 6 inch fourth generation Fire
tablet. My 7 inch sixth generation does not have this feature.
This is part of the reason I bought a used 6 inch Fire this past
December. I now have two of these tablets. Both have voice dictation
on the keyboard and can be used just as you want.
Why Amazon got rid of this feature on newer Fire tablets is anyone's
guess. It is a great feature.
Not sure what you are talking about with volume. I just boost the
volume with the rocker volume switch at the top of my Fire. However,
possibility your main volume is set very low in settings. Take a look.

on the top of the Fire tablet to manually raise or lower the volume. I
realize of course that I can use Alexa, but sometimes I wish to change
the volume manually. By default, it apparently is disabled.
