1. What is the easiest way to determine whether my Fire tablet is a seventh
or eighth generation?

Settings>Device Options>Device Model. As soon as you move focus to Device model
you will hear the specifics of what generation you have.

2. Are software updates supposed to occur automatically, or must I do
something to initiate an update?

By default, they will happen automatically. However, to manually check you can
go to Settings>Device Options>System Updates.

3. What is the command to determine the software version currently on my Fire?

Also Settings>Device Options>System Updates
