This has happened to me a few times.  I ended up having to not bother the unit for a while and let it charge.  Sometimes, it automatically turned on with voice and everything.  Other times, I had to turn it on.  I never held any fingers on the screen to get it working.

Hi David,

I did hold the two fingers for over five seconds and it still did not speak at all.

Carol,

The fact that you heard the short chime indicates that your tablet is likely powered on.

First, hold your power button for about 3 seconds.

After releasing the power button, try pressing two fingers on the screen. If you hear VoiceView speak, keep your fingers held down until you are advised that you can lift them up.

OK, I admit it.  I can't get my tablet started.

Hi,

My battery discharged completely and I don't remember how to turn my tablet back on.  I can hear the chimy sound.  I have tried holding two fingers on the tablet, both landscape and portrait.  I still can not get speech to come up.  Can someone please help? Thanks.

Carol
