Hi Karyn, the activedogs harness is like a British style harness with the
handle attaching at the shoulders. I am thinking of just getting a longer
handle as Clyde is shorter then Buckley was. he is comfortable in this harness
and seems very uncomfortable in the standard guide harness. I think it is
where the girth strap is the problem. on this harness it is back more. I
discussed it with my Dr. and she said if Clyde is comfortable with the harness
he has now and a longer handle is all you need then that's the way I should go.
she knows how important he is to me and she knows him.
with the back chaining on retrieve he wont take even his toys out of my
hand..... I have tried holding things in my hand and the most he will do is
nose them. I wait very patiently for him to lick, tooth, open his mouth
anything......he just wont do it. I don't know if he was punished from taking
things out of someone's hand or what. he was found as a stray so we don't
know what happened his fist 10 months of his life. when I c/t him I have to
almost put the treat in his mouth. I went to the site I think it was Cristy
sent and am reading through it I saved it to my favorites so I can read through
it when I have more time.

on another note this lady come to where I go everyday for lunch and she told my
friend that Clyde isnt a real SD because he didn't come from a program......
if I would have heard that.... well her dog is from Hearing and Service Dogs of
Minnesota where Buckley was from and we all know how that turned out. believe
me I understand stress with a SD. mine wasn't because of health reasons
though. having Clyde is like night and day compared to Buckley. Clyde is as
mellow as Buckley was hyper.

  Hi Ridge
It is good to hear from you. How does the Active Dogs harness work with
handle attachment. The reason I ask is that I use just a handle from Julie.
She can use different attachment hardware like various clasps. I found being
in a wheelchair that the actual attachment needed some flexibility for us to
be able to work turns down aisles and such. To compensate I have D rings
attached to the handle and then I use a fastener similar to a carabiner to
connect to the D rings on both the handle and his harness.

With retrieve. I too was having trouble with this. Are you on the OCAD list.
I would recommend it for working on the service dog tasks. I have found if I
tell people or remind them in my posts that I am deafblind their comments
are easier to put to good use.
Debi Davis posted an excellent post in regards to my own question about
gaining the hold. In clicker training the goal is to back chain- start with
the last aspect of the skill and work backwards. So you want to get a good
solid hold before you move on to having him get it from the floor. Thane had
a marvelous take and spit it back out Smile
Now that I am beginning to use the clicker and treat for his offerings, it
is going better I think but its only been a couple days.
Start with a sniff, go to the lick, go to the teeth on the item, click and
treat before he is ending it/ spitting it out and slowly very slowly work
your way up to that solid hold where he will keep holding it no matter what
you do, no matter where you are. Then and only then would I work on lowering
the item to the ground by holding your hand lower as you progress until he
can get it from the ground and hold onto it for you.
Others may share this concept a lot better but this is the basics.
