People raise them for pets, and also for the infamous "so the children can see the miracle of birth," and then release them or they escape. I've also known hunters who raised and released them on their property. Human-raised ones can be just about anywhere and won't necessarily act like proper wild birds. - Kim Harrell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisa Mease" <kunsthure@xxxxxxxxx> To: va-richmond-general@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, December 8, 2014 8:10:09 AM Subject: [va-richmond-general] Re: bobwhite/VA quail in Stratford Hills It's interesting that there have been Bobwhites in the city. About a month ago, I felt very confident that I saw one at the edge of a stand of trees in a "wilder" area on the grounds of Glen Allen HS (brown with white on the head, walking like a chicken, about the size of a Mourning Dove, no tail when it flew off, no flight call like a Mourning Dove or Killdeer) but a birder I know told me that it almost certainly couldn't have been one based on the habitat. If they are in the city at bird feeders, now I'm wondering if I really did see one. What do you all think? -Lisa On Sunday, December 7, 2014, FreeLists Mailing List Manager < ecartis@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > wrote: va-richmond-general Digest Sat, 06 Dec 2014 Volume: 13 Issue: 188 In This Issue: [va-richmond-general] bobwhite/VA quail in Stratford Hills [va-richmond-general] Re: bobwhite/VA quail in Stratford Hil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 6 Dec 2014 12:23:29 -0200 Subject: [va-richmond-general] bobwhite/VA quail in Stratford Hills From: Anita Storino < astorino11@xxxxxxxxx > For about the past month, two neighbors have told me they have had quail in their yards, here in Stratford Hills in Richmond. This morning, at least two were in my front yard eating under a bird feeder. NOTE: I tried to attach some pictures, but the email would not go through with them attached. Anyone wanting pictures can contact me. After some research, I realize these are Northern Bobwhite aka Virginia Quail. Very cool - bobwhite/quail in the city!
