Hello Bob White observers: A couple of observations re Bob White. (1) The
good picture was definitely a Bob White; (2) Virginia Quail and Northern
Bob White are the same bird; Northern Bobwhite is the official name;
Virginia quail is a term locals use; (3) a little history: in the latter
part of the 70s, when i first began to visit what is now called the pony
pasture and wetlands, Bobwhite were quite common, and there was much more
habitat similar to the hedge rows that Bobwhite favor. By the early 80's,
the quail were gone as was much of their habitat; by mid-90's quail were
gone from most of Virginia (as was much of their habitat).

These days I don't keep up much with the distribution of quail in Virginia,
but it's certainly exciting to think they seem to back in the neighborhood.
