Well, I wouldn't put it past the ducks to know about the upcoming eclipse, but 
"eclipse plumage" is just another way of saying they're in non-breeding plumage 
- not all spiffed up to impress the ladies this time of year. Males tend to 
look much drabber and closer to females. They'll be molting into breeding 
plumage while they're wintering here, so they'll look quite different by the 
time they leave in the spring.
