Eclipse plumage? Is that because of the lunar eclipse on Wednesday morning, here between 5:15 am and sunrise? Jim Blowers -----Original Message----- From: va-richmond-general-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:va-richmond-general-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Lewis Barnett Sent: Monday, October 06, 2014 13:59 To: Richmond Audubon Society mailing list mailing list Subject: [va-richmond-general] Ducks arriving Wintering ducks are beginning to filter in to the Richmond area. Jack Esworthy reported Northern Shovelers and Blue Winged Teal from Dutch Gap yesterday, and Ellison Orcutt found Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, and Northern Shoveler on Swan Lake at Byrd Park this morning, along with Pied-billed Grebe and American Coots. The ducks at Byrd Park were all either female or males in eclipse plumage, so it would pay to have a field guide with you to sort them out. The teal are significantly smaller than the Mallards, which helps in picking them out of the crowd. Lewis Barnett You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
