The skywatch is open to the public and has been advertised in the
newspapers. Here is what Terry Barker, President of the other RAS, says
about it:

This will be a club event for Thursday, Aug. 7, 8:30 pm. The City of
Richmond is hosting it, and there has been an announcement in the paper, so
it could be huge, we just don't know yet. But we should have at least 5
telescopes there, just in case. If this goes well, it couild be a regular
event for us and the city, so this is pretty exciting.

If you don't know where Bryan Park is, just Google it, but here's
directions--it's basically at the junction of I-64 and I-95.

From the south, after turning onto I-95 from 64, take exit 80 (first exit).
This will put you on Westbrook Avenue, then take a right onto Hermitage.
You'll see the entrance to Bryan Park on your left. Once in the park, bear
left at the fork, and go across the small bridge. Then take your second left
at the top of the hill after that. (The roadway is divided - one way
in...one way out).

Parking is in the Shelter 3 Parking lot across from the soccer fields.

You'll se the soccer fields on your right. We'll be on the last field across
the street from the parking area. Park staff will direct you close to the
field for off loading. However, please remember: NO vehicles on the soccer
fields

Sometimes they are hooting in August (part of their bonding/mating
activities, I assume) in the strip of woods between the meadow (assume you
set up there or on the soccer fields?) and the road that runs parallel to
the meadow and field complex from the parking area near the brick bathrooms.
Would love to hear about anything you note about them. I thought there was
a nest failure there after a big wind storm, but a regular early morning
birder saw a group of 3 recently. Is the astronomy thing open to
non-members? Thanks.

I am going to Bryan Park Thursday night, if it is clear, as part of the
other RAS - the Richmond Astronomical Society - presenting a skywatch there.
Should we be listening for owls?

About 6:30pm the owl was in the same tree, but no longer as well hidden from
the same direction on the road. From the size I suspect a male, but no luck
so far locating the female. I tried to wait to see if they started hooting,
but nothing before leaving for Shockoe Bottom.

The regular trip to Bryan Park this month produced beautiful weather and
about 35 species or so (Sue, please post any I leave out):

Canada Geese

Commn Grackles

E. Wood-Pewees

Mallards

American Black Duck (one)

Grt Bl Herons

Grt Crested Flycatchers

Acadian Flycatcher

Car Wrens

T Titmice (titmouses?)

Blue-gray Gnatcatchers

Ruby-thr Hummingbird

Wh-br Nuthatches

N. Mockingbirds

Car. Chickadees

Barn Swallows (not many - most have left)

Orchard Oriole (a surprise)

Cooper's Hawk (probably 2 - a male and a female, though in separate parts of
the park)

Gr. Catbird

The owl was sitting in a pine tree. I and another person tried to relocate
it later but without any luck. We did, however, add Turkey Vulture to the
list. There was also an OSPREY flying and calling nearby as we left Stir
Crazy (the restaurant - we didn't become sane suddenly :-).
