On May 27th I started to notice more purple finches at my feeder. When I
looked at them closely, I noticed that their markings were similar to the
female, yet the lines of coloration on the head were much less distinct and
paler than the females. The birds were just a little bit smaller than the
adults. I also saw the wing fluttering typical of feeding solicitation of
hatchlings, but the young also seem to be able to take food out of the feeders.
I have tried to find out more about juvenile purple finches, but can't find
pictures in any of my field guides. It seems quite early for hatching out.
Does anyone know a good source of information for this?
