Pretty common for gulls this time of year. Large numbers of dragonflies are
starting to migrate and the gulls take advantage.

We had the same experience here last Saturday on the lower Machodoc just off
the Potomac river. Hundreds of gulls, swooping and soaring over my house then
a neighbor's. Definitely gulls. Looked like they were catching insects. Very
weird. Have only seen this around piers when big fishing boats come in.
