I stopped by Riverview Park, a great park with several miles of easy trails
next to the river, in Charlottesville after an early Dr. appt today as that
park is a great one for Yellowthroats, White-eyed Vireos, and Blue grey
Gnatcatchers. Of course I didn't see any of them. But as I approached the
trails by
the river I saw an Osprey flying upriver with a fish in its claws about 15 feet
above the river, maybe 30' away. It landed up by the waterfalls. While
walking in the woods next to the small now almost drained swamp, I saw a
Louisana
Waterthrush moving along and feeding and watched it for awhile. I turned and
left and walked about ten steps before it struck me what I was hearing while
standing there was a Worm Eating warbler. I walked back and there it was on the
other side of the swamp in the brush on the hillside. First one of the year for
me. I also saw a Hermit thrush for about ten min. from just 9' away foraging,
turning leaves, and slowly moving along. Incredible detail and just in the
close range of my binoculars. There were probably 15 Yellow rump Warblers
total,
2-3 Ruby crowned Kinglets, 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers(a full adult male and a
1st year bird), a Sharp-shinned Hawk gliding through, an Eastern Pheobe
perched, and the usual suspects. After leaving there I drove through the
cemetary
on the top of the hill by the park. There were 2 Coopers hawks circling and
diving together putting on quite a show. I was out of time but this is
definitely
a place worth checking out more. Dave White Zion Crossroads
