The Back Bay Birding Club went to Mackay Island, NC today for a windy yet
beautiful sunset walk. Before the walk began my husband and I went to the
overlook on the causeway. The Snow Geese were just everywhere...large groups
rising up like white clouds. One group contained 2 stunning White Pelicans!
They flew with the geese like they were part of the family! They went down in
some tall grasses and in the 20 minutes we were there didn't come back out.
We had to get back to the office to meet up with our group for the birdwalk.
Our first stop on the walk was the overlook. We were not able to find the
White Pelicans again...DARN!
Down on the refuge we spotted 34 species of birds before the sun set.
Ducks present were:
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Black
Mallard
Northern Shoveler
Northern Pintail
Green Winged Teal
Lesser Scaup
Hooded Merganser
We also saw:
Sora
American Bittern
American Coot
and a very comical Pied Billed Grebe with a huge fish that was impossible for
him to eat. When he went under the water we all wondered if the fish pulled
him under!
One of the Bald Eagles was on the nest and was just stunning right before
sunset!
