Top birds this week are MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD* in VA and WESTERN
KINGBIRD in MD.
Other birds of interest include lingering ducks, warblers, and
sparrows, WILD TURKEY, COMMON LOON, WHITE IBIS, MISSISSIPPI KITE,
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, PIPING PLOVER,
GLAUCOUS GULL, GULL-BILLED TERN, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, CERULEAN WARBLER, HENSLOW'S SPARROW*, SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED
SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, DICKCISSEL, and BOBOLINK.
A juvenile MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD* was seen over Back Bay, Virginia
Beach, VA on June 5.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was found along Elliott Island Road, Dorchester Co,
MD on June 6.
A pair of BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS* were spotted at Pinewood Lake
in Alexandria, VA on June 5 and 6. There were several reports of
lingering ducks this week. A CANVASBACK was at the head of Bush River
in Harford Co, MD on June 10, a RING-NECKED DUCK was on Wilde Lake in
Columbia, Howard Co, MD on June 6, two COMMON GOLDENEYES were spotted
in the Potomac River near Conn Island, Montgomery Co, MD on June 5 and
June 10, and a RUDDY DUCK was seen from Aberdeen Proving Ground,
Harford Co, MD on June 8.
A young WILD TURKEY was found at Poplar Point on the Anacostia River
in Washington, DC on June 9.
Two COMMON LOONS were at Claytor Lake State Park in Radford Co, VA on
June 8.
An unusually large flock of 14 WHITE IBIS flew by Indian River Inlet,
Sussex Co, DE on June 5.
MISSISSIPPI KITES were spotted in two locations in Fairfax Co, VA. A
pair was seen at the Sandburg Middle School on Ft Hunt Road on June
11; a single bird was there on June 8. Another single bird flew over
Waynewood on June 6. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew near the intersection of
Nicodemus Road and Medford Road in Carroll Co, MD on June 9. A
juvenile BROAD-WINGED HAWK posed obligingly on Greens Corner Road,
Culpeper Co, VA on June 10.
A PEREGRINE FALCON continues in the Bailey Crossroads area, Fairfax
Co, VA.
The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park, Sussex Co, DE had 4 PIPING
PLOVERS and a first summer GLAUCOUS GULL on June 6. Chincoteague
National Wildlife Refuge, Accomack Co, VA had 3 PIPING PLOVERS and a
GULL-BILLED TERN on June 9.
The first documented sighting of WILLOW FLYCATCHER in Buckingham Co,
VA was reported from James River State Park on June 7.
A late RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was in Isaac Crossman Park, Falls Church,
VA on June 5.
Multiple CERULEAN WARBLERS are reported from Thompson Wildlife Mgt
Area, Fauquier Co, VA. Sightings of late migrating warblers include
BLACKBURNIAN in Great Falls, VA on June 10, BLACKPOLL near Fort
Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co, MD on June 5 and in Charlottesville, VA on
June 10, and MOURNING in Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC on June 7.
HENSLOW'S SPARROWS* were reported from Pea Ridge, Garret Co, MD and
Rt. 601 in Highland Co, VA. A SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was
found along Elliott Island Rd on June 6. Late WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS
were in Columbia, Howard Co, MD on June 9 and a white morph
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was on the corner of Canning House Road and
Mitchell Drive, Harford Co, MD on June 10.
A lingering ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at Pickering Creek Audubon
Center, Talbot Co, MD on June 6.
A DICKCISSEL continued to sing on Antietam National Battlefield near
the corner of Dunker Church Road and Mansfield Avenue. It was seen on
June 5 and June 8. Nine DICKCISSELS were found along Blackjack Road
south of Stevensburg, Culpeper Co, VA on June 10.
Three BOBOLINKS sang and displayed in the fields near Waterford Downs,
Loudoun Co, VA on June 10.
