Was Stokes' published in 1997 and is it Eastern Region vs. Western Region.
I'm not exactly sure what he means when he says region (of the U.S. of North
America?) 'Couse I'm interested now in the eastern U.S.

I think the tape that Cathy references is the Peterson "Birding by Ear"
and "More Birding by Ear".

I have both CD's (purchased at local Wild Bird Unlimited) I've use the
Stokes more recently because you can go directly to a single bird's song
rather than a "class" of birds. Petersons groups similar birds together and,
for example, you have to listen to all the wrens and kinglets before getting
to the gnatcatchers.
It seems to me I had a tape early on that not only had birds group
together but actually had someone talking about the quality of the songs and
hints about what to listen for. Unfortunately, I can't remember who made it.
Most of my tapes are packed away somewhere, but if no one else remembers
this and the name, I'll try to find it.
