The following was forwarded to Susan Heath, Secretary of the Virginia Avian
Records Committee (VARCOM). This species does not require 'review' in this
area, but it's always good to have reports of this now-annual visitor; it is
conceivable the species could nest in Virginia, and there have been repeated
sightings on the Shore in recent spring seasons. The date of the sighting
below is
4 May:
"As Susan and I were travelling down Lankford Hwy. (Rte. 13) from
Parksley to Nassowadox this afternoon, we saw and - briefly - travelled
in the same direction under a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE. The time was ca.
1545 and the location was ca. 2 miles N of Exmore. Not a really rare
sighting, I guess, but a fine one just the same. We've seen lots of
them in southern Mexico and in various places in C. and S. America, but
they've never gotten old hat - always a thrill to see and watch (even at
55 mph!).
