After horizontal bird walks, Great Falls-Riverbend and Occoquan, I
tried a vertical bird walk today, May 29th.  Went up the South
Ridge Trail and down the North Ridge Trail, with a brunch at the
intersection with the Appalachian Trail.

These are the species I saw (or heard):

Turkey Vulture
Canada Goose
Red-tailed Hawk (juvenile)
Rock Dove
Mourning Dove
Chimney Swift
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker

Acadian Flycatcher
Red-eyed Vireo
Blue Jay
Am. Crow

Barn Swallow
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
E. Bluebird (boxes are helping!)

Wood Thrush (good numbers in mid-elevation forest)
Gray Catbird

If you want to do that hike, bring water and snacks.
Fortunately, mosquitoes and deer flies were sparse.
