Birders,
My husband and I hiked the bridle trail at Sky Meadows State Park on what was a
gorgeous Sunday morning. The raptors were enjoying the light winds and clear
skies. We counted at least 6 Red-tailed Hawks cruising over the fields, and at
one point, an adult Bald Eagle flew straight at us, his huge white head like a
spotlight. He veered off and glided just over our heads. Two Common Ravens
tumbled in the sky, rising and falling in tandem. A Red-shouldered Hawk joined
one of the Red-tails for a while. There were more Red-tails, Black and Turkey
Vultures over the distant ridges. Other birds included many Northern
Mockingbirds, a half-dozen Indigo Buntings, several Blue-gray Gnatcatchers,
Catbirds, Barn Swallows, Eastern Towhees, Field Sparrows, a lone Common
Yellowthroat, Northern Flickers, Goldfinches, Fish and American Crows, and a
skulking Green Heron on one of the ponds in the middle of the meadow.
