Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory opened for action today at Kiptopeke
State Park on Virginia's Eastern Shore between rain showers. I'll let Jethro
report on the exciting beginning to the passerine banding season. I took a few
supplies to Jethro and helped with the recording of the banding data. On the
way to Stingrays for lunch my wife and I went up Arlington Rd and returned
south after lunch along rte 600 with a foray down Magotha Rd where a
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was singing near the road. In the muddy potato fields at
various spots along the route there were plenty of LAUGHING GULLS, a few
RING-BILLED GULLS, about a dozen GULL-BILLED TERNS, and some shorebirds. My
count is as follows: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER 14, SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER 60, KILLDEER
17, LEAST SANDPIPER 5, SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER 3, STILT SANDPIPER 3, LESSER
YELLOWLEGS 3, GREATER YELLOWLEGS 1, WHIMBREL 2 fly-bys, GLOSSY IBIS 2. On the
way over along the CBBT I saw many COMMON TERNS, a CASPIAN TERN, and a BLACK
TERN. We didn't stop on any of the islands.
Cheers,
Bob
