VA-Birders,
Birding around the home and bluebird trail, I spotted a pair of
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS soaring and calling. This was not so unusual as I
believe the pair to be nesting somewhere near by. What amazed me was to see
an AMERICAN KESTREL diving and swooping at the hawks. Id never seen this
behavior before and was doubly amazed to see it over very suburban/urban
Vienna, VA! I wonder if it was just a migrating Kestrel of if all of the
cicadas emerging are attracting this insect eater.
I have also noted very few birds at the feeders this past week. Again, I can
t help but assume this to be cicada related. I usually fill the tube
feeders with hulled sunflower every morning, but this past week they have
all remained full. There has been a pair of BALTIMORE ORIOLES in the yard;
the female was carrying vines.
