I took an early lunch break today and birded around the northwest
end of Lake Anna. Best birds were possible KING RAILS and a definite
SEDGE WREN in the marshes at Terrys Run along Rt. 651 in Orange Co.
This area can be reached by turning right onto 651 off of US 522 5
miles north of Rt. 208 or left on 651 7 miles south of Rt 20.
The marshes will be on your right about 3 miles after turning off
of US 522.
I did not see the rails but had them grunting to tape playback.
The grunts were louder, deeper in tone, and slower than typical
Virginia Rail grunts. The birds only grunted and did not give
any other calls, so its possible that the birds could be Virginia.
However, the birds only responded to playback of King Rail grunts and
calls. King Rails have nested northeast(Huntley Meadows)and southeast
(Dinwiddie Co.)of here.
At the same marsh, I heard a SEDGE WREN singing. Although probably a
transient, this species has nested northeast (Nokesville) of here.
I will try to get back to the marshes early on Thursday morning and hope
the birds will give calls that would definitively ID them.
