I stopped at Roaches Run about 12:45 pm today; not as much there when I checked
it out as Val's report. Went next to the mouth of Four Mile Run, where I saw
nothing. Then drove to the Belle Haven Picnic area and arrived there about
1:45 pm. I didn't see much on the water and thought I would spend some time
just getting more familiar with the gulls while I sat at a picnic table and ate
my lunch. Fortunately, I set up my scope first and was stunned to see that
what I thought was probably a large group of gulls turn out to be the 34 Tundra
Swans that Fred Bogar had seen earlier today. This was the most Tundra Swans I
have ever seen at one time and the best views I have ever had of them.
I wanted to stay and hopefully see the swans take off, but the wind whipped up
around 2:15 and the rain quickly followed. On the way home, by the time I
passed the point where they had been lingering close to the parkway, they were
gone. One of these days ...
It is, indeed, a nice place to sit and have lunch. Sitting down while scoping
the water was even nicer.
