VA Birders,
Dave Boltz and I met as the gate rolled open at 7AM this mostly cloudy, mild
morning and had some typically good birding. We found a plethora of Orchard
Orioles near Deephole Pt., with all being either first year or adult female.
The Osprey were numerous, and we found White-eyed and Warbling Vireo, Wood
Ducks, House and Carolina Wren, a Caspian Tern and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers.
Observed many Common Yellowthroat, and only one of 3 other warbler species:
Prothonotary, Yellow, and Yellow-breasted Chat. The highlight was a Mississippi
Kite soaring as we returned to the parking lot via Easy Road. It was very
graceful as it maneuvered to catch insects, and had at least one tail bar to
indicate it was likely not an adult. It sailed away to the North, and we didn't
see it again as we drove out via Wildlife Drive, or at the Belmont Bay Marina.
At the Marina we did add Turkey Vulture and Spotted Sandpiper to bring the day
species total to 62. Occoquan Bay NWR list is below.
