Subject: Purple Martins lured to the Bradford pear trees (17th Street) downtown.
Cc: susaneridd@xxxxxxxxx, jjfdc@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, fitzgerald3herb@xxxxxxx
There were 25 purple martins near the Bradford Pear trees in at 17th Street
...Farmers Market (Richmond VA) Wednesday evening as I wore my hat to protect
my head from the constant rainfall. I was able to lure them into the pear trees
with a purple martin socialization CD. However, a mockingbird chased them from
the trees by going into the trees... emitting the sound of a hawk or some type
of bird's warning sound. Tomorrow I will use two CD players ......one at the
north end of the roe of Bradford Pear trees the other at the south end of these
trees. This, hopefully, will confuse the mocking bird, causing him or her to
leave the area for more serene surroundings When ...and if ....a large flock of
purple martins shows up, the mocking bird will leave immediately because they
can easily chase off a group of 30 birds... but not thousands of birds. The CD
must be turned off as the purple martins enter the tree . This should be done
to avoid interferring with the predator-is-present warning sound that the
purple martins will give to warn each other of impending danger from a
predator.
