Encouraged by earlier VA-Bird reports, I searched for MISSISSIPPI KITES
today from Low Ground Road (Rt. 730) at the bridge over the Meherrin
River on the Greenville and Southampton county line. Shortly after
noontime, I observed a MISSISSIPPI KITE in adult plumage for about 10
minutes. A second kite provided only a brief glimpse in the distance
before disappearing below the tree tops down river from the bridge.
Fortunately, the first bird came closer and perched, in clear view, on a
bare branch near the top of a sweet gun tree, also down river from the
bridge. After a few minutes it flew a short distance toward the river,
landing on a dead limb of another tree where it was also easily seem in
the scope.
