Over the last several days, I've found three catbirds continuing at
Occoquan Bay NWR.two that I assume are the same birds previously reported by
Kurt Gaskill. One can be found in the general vicinity of the parking
lot at the trail head for Fox/Bay View trails; one at the intersection of
Bay View and the Wildlife Drive; and, a third in the tangles along the
Wildlife Drive about 200 yards before the exit gate. Likewise, I've found
two
house wrens, one of which was previously reported in the parking lot area
near the pond blind; the other in the tangles at the Wildlife Drive exit
gate.
Following up on Sherman Suter's report of a palm warbler along the hike/bike
trail near Belle Haven Marina picnic area, that same day I found a pine
warbler and a redstart mixed in with a gathering of waxwings,
yellow rumps, and house finches at Riverside Park about six miles further
down the Mount Vernon Parkway.
Nothing spectacular about these sightings, but it keeps things interesting
while still waiting for a big water fowl push.
