Decided to stay home today to work on web project. Here in Charlottesville,
it's a gorgeous Sunday morning with bright sunshine, temps in the upper
70's, a hint of a breeze, and very little humidity. Instead of being inside
looking out, I hauled camera equipment and computer to outside patio. With
so much bird activity distracting me every few minutes, I will have to
either give up trying to work on project or go back inside.
Approximately 30 minutes ago I heard the high pitch call of what sounded
like a BLACKPOLL. Ok, I knew it was a Blackpoll I heard but because of
extreme late date I tried to pass it off to a Chimney Swift that may have
been flying over. I quickly dismissed that possibility because the call was
stationary, coming from upper canopy of next door neighbor's rather large
tall wild cherry tree. It was there for several minutes and then I later
heard the insanely late BLACKPOLL call a bit further away, possibly from
neighbor's walnut tree two doors up.
The nearby nesting DOWNY WOODPECKER have fledged and adults are now bringing
them to our suet basket. One of the young flies up to within 10 feet of
where I'm sitting to peck around at base of the Dogwood tree, too close to
photograph with the 300mm.
