Howdy all,
Today there were a few more birds around the banding station. Although we
only had one good netrun, we ended the day with 32. Almost our highest day of
the
season. We finally had a nice little push of AMERICAN REDSTARTS and COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS who's numbers have been very low over the last two weeks. So it
was nice to get a bunch of redstarts. The best bird of the day was a GREAT
CRESTED FLYCATCHER, a species we don't catch many of here. We average only one
a
season since 1994. Hopefully this one was not it!
Most of the birds we captured today were all pretty thin. Sure hope they hang
around and are able to find food here. It would be nice if we caught a few of
these in a few days to see if they had gained any weight.
Once again, early morning is the time to be here. We caught 22 of the 32 by
7:15. Then tapered pretty fast.
Not sure what to expect tomorrow. We need some north wind tonight which we
might get. But it is forecasted to be a bit windy tomorrow. Wind is not good
for
a banding station, so I am hopeful the winds hold off at least through the
morning!
Here are the totals for the last day of August (Yea!)
American Redstart 14
Common Yellowthroat 6
Black-throated Blue Warbler 2
Black-and-white Warbler 2
Northern Waterthrush 1
Traill's Flycatcher 2
White-eyed Vireo 1
Carolina Wren 1
Veery 1
Great Crested Flycatcher 1
Northern Cardinal 1
TOTAL ----------------------------------- 32
Looks to be a busy weekend for visitors! Sure hope it is busy with birds as
well!
Have a great weekend!!!
Cheers,
