Howdy all,
Although it was a nice cloudy, cool day, we really didn't catch much at the
banding station. In fact, we barely broke 10 birds today. Although the numbers
were low, we still managed to catch some nice species and at the right time
(when we had visitors). We caught two YELLOW WARBLERS and one SUMMER TANAGER,
two species we usually catch less than five of in a season. We also caught a
very worn (feathers) adult female BLUE GROSBEAK as well. But maybe the biggest
surprise, was the capture of three different DOWNY WOODPECKERS. One was
perviously banded (from Kiptopeke 2005) the other two were new. The most ever
banded
in a season since 1994 was 4 (2006), so it was quite the surprise when we
banded two and caught a third!
Butterflies were not really around today. Maybe too much cloud cover. A few
made it to the flowers but overall numbers were down. Hummingbird numbers at my
feeders here at the house is still on the rise. They have been feeding
constantly since I have been home. Always a nice treat!
Here are the species for 8/19:
Prairie Warbler 1
Yellow Warbler 2
Ovenbird 1
Summer Tanager 1
Downy Woodpecker 2
Carolina Wren 2
Blue Grosbeak 1
Northern Mockingbird 1
TOTAL ----------------------------- 11
Quite a few BALTIMORE ORIOLES and many EASTERN KINGBIRDS were around this
morning in the park. Saw a few AMERICAN REDSTARTS as well, but activity was
pretty low.
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
